Patience my friend - iv is a disparate group of people some of whom like you are hungry for action and others who are busy caught up in stuff. Getting to organize a group is tough in the best of times and given the current environment when they are in the line of fire of congressmen backed by hordes of hate-mongers and anti-immigrants masquerading as public-policy specialists and grassroot actvists with a friendly media filled with reporters who are ambivalent about immigration themselves, you can't expect a group to form overnight to tap your energy and skills! Why don't you do some research meanwhile - I have been trying to find out something about the director of a group called cis which wields enormous - or ginormous is more appropriate- influence on the current debate and I cant find anything about him beyond where he went to school! granted he is not a politician so we're not entitled to personal details and i'm least interested in it but for someone actively influencing public policy and discourse with millions of lives on the line, so very little is known about them. Once again, dont expect people to be courteous and receptive to courtesy overnight.

But when i am told that I dont have access to this thread or that thread because I am not a donor...I do have the right to question if this organization actually represents all immigrants or just the donors?? If the motto of IV becomes "Change for fairness and justice (For Donors Only)" then it would make a lot more sense to me. Given thanksgiving is barely a week away, we can be certain of the usual platitudes directed at immigrants - this is a good time to remind the average American how far they have strayed from their roots and forgotten the true sentiment behind the tradition. Immigrants have always been hated and reviled by those that got here earlier - but the current anti-immigrant sentiment is vastly different in scale and sophistry due to the times we live in. If every IV member signs up 10 citizens to the immigrant cause, we should easily be 100,000 strong in a couple of weeks. It could be anyone from your advisor at school who mentored you to your buddies at work - even the stinkin relatives should be harassed. Though CIS and Numbersusa pretend that they are a product of the current anti-illegal sentiment, they started out much before the so-called 'wave' started. And they have adapted and honed their strategies very well to crush whatever relief Congress contemplates/passes. Consider the way CIS was initially dedicated to 'researching' immigrant issues that they would complain about the media's positive stories about immigrant contributions as merely anecdotal evidence not worthy of rebuttal. Now they are suddenly fond of anecdotal evidence themselves since experts began demolishing their claims of job-stealing and other baseless charges convincingly(esp CFR's Sebastian Mallaby) using empirical evidence-they shamelessly stoop to use someone's sob story to make their case. Assuming this discussion is about immigration/permanent-settlement and not about short term visits, work and study.
On the side note, The only problem faced in india is over population which triggers almost all other issues. If india implements onechildpolicy most of the problems faced today will disappear in few decades. Your child (note: singular) need not leave india to enjoy international level lifestyle & benefits.
As a backup plan to greencard advocacy we need to lobby the indian government to implement onechildpoilcy immediately.
You do realise that one of the biggest reasons for India's rapid growth is it's population right? It is both a boon and a curse. And if you "enforce" a one child policy, there will be a rapid decline in population. There will be major social problems, what happens to a couple if their only child dies in teenage?. Apart from obvious social issues (kids will have fewer cousins and fewer relatives), the biggest problems will arise in 30 years when the severely depleted young populace will have to support the huge number of retired old workers either directly through parental support or indirectly through taxes.
Think of your old age too, these solutions look interesting, but it will kill the very reasons that make India attractive today.
A gradual stabilization of population by encouraging families to have just two children through social programs is the way to go and I think India has done a good job of it in the last 2-3 decades. These things take time.

I don't think it bodes well for anything that is sent to the Table. This Senate Language Glossary has what "motion to table" means, essentially something that senate does not want to Consider. This Amendment(1249) is said to have been ordered "to lie on the table" not sure if it is same as the motion to table. But, I think we should hope for an amendment that does not have a table associated with its status.

I am a filmmaker and writer, and am currently developing a proposal for a digital documentary on the experiences of dependent visa holders. The film primarily aims to educate potential dependent visa holders and their families about the limitations of life on these visas so that they may make an informed decision. It also aims to reach policy makers in the US and others who can influence policy change.
As part of my background research I have some questionnaires for the following categories of people.
1) Those currently on dependent visa.
2) Those who were once on a dependent visa and now have an H1 (or some other working status, not a Green Card).
3) Those who were once on a dependent visa and now have a Green Card.
4) Those who are back in home country after being on dependent status.
5) Those who are here on a primary visa but have a dependent spouse.
6) Those who are currently in home country but are considering going on a dependent visa.

I talked to many representatives regarding my I 140 filing from yesterday.
This is what all msot all of them said.
Nebraska center is running behind with their schedule in generating their receipt numbers.
First all the applications go to the mail room. If everything looks fine with the application, the mail room people would send the cheques to be enchased. This normally takes like a day or 2. Then they send the applications to a different department where the clerk needs to put the information in the system and generate the reciept and mail it out. All this process should normally take, 5 to 7 days and Nebraska Center has a turn around time of 15 days.
But Nebraska center is backlogged a bit due to the numerous applications they recieved, till last week for I 140's. And a decision was made yesterday that, the Nebraska Center would catch up generating all the receipts by August 1st. (Thats what the reps told me). So everyone's receipt number who filed their I 140 by July 16th should be available in the system by August 1st(we wud complete the 15 days turn around time too). And if they get mailed out by then, we may recieve in a week or so, by Aug 10th.
So everyone will be good to go. Even if you dont get the receipt, your checks would be enchashed by then which will have a receipt number and you can call the USCIS office to confirm that receipt number (as they will have it in their system by August 1st) and just file by putting the copies of those checks.
Its not our problem that they delay the receipts.
But I hope that everyone will get their receipts by August 10th. So just chill out and relax.
